Patent Renewal Services

A patent is only worth what it protects, and it only stays in force if you pay the renewal fees on time. Miss a deadline and you can lose a valuable right permanently. Panoramix IP takes the risk out of renewals, with an in-house team that manages the deadlines, the payments and the portfolio decisions, so your patents stay in force and your budget stays under control.

Whether you hold a single UK patent or a portfolio spanning many countries, we keep your renewals on track and help you make deliberate decisions about which rights to maintain and which to let lapse as part of your wider patent strategy.

•  Renewal deadlines tracked and paid, so nothing slips through the cracks

•  Portfolio reviews to keep spend focused on the patents that matter

•  UK, European and international renewals coordinated in one place

Patent Renewal Experts: Here To Help

Our team takes ownership of your patent renewals so you never lose a valuable right to a missed deadline, and so every renewal pound is spent where it delivers value.

Here’s what we help with:

• Tracking and paying UK patent renewal fees, due annually from the 5th year

• European patent renewals during prosecution and national renewals after grant

• International renewals across multiple jurisdictions through our associate network

• Portfolio reviews to decide which patents to maintain, prune or let lapse

• Reminders, reporting and clear records of what is due and when

• Advice on restoration where a patent has lapsed

• Budget forecasting for upcoming renewal cycles

Where you hold a larger portfolio, an IP audit can also help identify which patents continue to support your commercial objectives, where unnecessary costs may be reduced and where protection gaps need attention. Panoramix specifically positions its IP audits as a way to identify opportunities to cut unnecessary costs and optimise an existing portfolio.

Never Lose a Patent to a Missed Deadline

Patent renewal fees fall due on a strict schedule and generally increase over the life of the patent. Miss a deadline, and even the short grace period that may follow, and the patent can lapse irrecoverably, handing your competitors the freedom to use technology you invested in protecting.

We remove that risk. By tracking every deadline across your portfolio and confirming every payment, we make sure your patents stay in force for as long as you want them to. You get certainty, clear records and one less thing to worry about.

Renewal management forms an important part of wider patent protection. As your business grows and products evolve, we can help ensure the patents you continue to maintain still support your commercial position.

Spending Your Renewal Budget Wisely

Not every patent deserves to be maintained for its full term. As renewal fees rise and commercial priorities shift, some rights stop earning their keep. Paying to renew them regardless is simply money lost.

We help you review your portfolio periodically and make deliberate decisions, maintaining the patents that protect current and future products, and pruning those that no longer do. The result is a leaner, more valuable portfolio and a renewal budget focused where it counts.

For larger or changing portfolios, combining renewal reviews with an IP audit or wider patent strategy review can help ensure your filing and maintenance spend remains aligned with your products, markets and long-term commercial goals.

FAQs

When are UK patent renewal fees due?

Renewal fees for a UK patent become due before the end of the fourth year from filing and annually thereafter, with the first payment typically covering the fifth year. Fees generally increase each year.

As part of our wider patent protection services, we track these dates for you and confirm each payment so nothing is missed.

What happens if I miss a renewal deadline?

There is usually a six-month grace period after the due date during which the renewal can still be paid, with a late fee. If that period passes, the patent lapses. In limited circumstances a lapsed patent may be restored if the failure to pay was unintentional, but this is not guaranteed, which is why reliable deadline management matters so much.

How do European patent renewals work?

While a European application is pending, renewal fees are paid to the EPO. After grant, a European patent generally becomes a bundle of national rights, and renewals must then be paid separately in each country where it has taken effect, under the applicable national rules.

We coordinate this across territories so your protection stays in force where you need it, while considering whether maintaining each right continues to make commercial sense within your wider patent strategy.

Can you manage renewals for patents in many countries?

Yes. Through our associate network we manage renewals across multiple jurisdictions, consolidating the deadlines, reminders and payments so you deal with a single point of contact rather than juggling many local agents and calendars.

For businesses with substantial international portfolios, an IP audit can also help identify where maintaining protection continues to deliver value and where portfolio costs could potentially be reduced.

Should I renew every patent I own?

Not necessarily. As fees rise, it is worth reviewing whether each patent still supports a product, a licensing opportunity or a strategic aim. Letting go of patents that no longer earn their keep frees budget for those that do.

This is why renewals should form part of your wider patent strategy rather than being treated purely as an administrative exercise. We help you make these decisions deliberately rather than by default.

Can a lapsed patent be brought back?

Sometimes. Depending on the jurisdiction and the circumstances, a lapsed patent may be restored if the relevant legal requirements are met and an application for restoration is made within the applicable time limit. The rules are strict and outcomes are not guaranteed, so prevention is far better than cure.

We can advise on the available options if you are in this position and help you put appropriate renewal management in place for your wider patent portfolio.

How much do renewals cost?

The official renewal fees are set by each patent office and can rise over the life of the patent, and there is a service fee for managing them. We provide clear cost forecasts so you can budget for upcoming renewal cycles across your portfolio.

For businesses managing multiple patents, we can also review renewal expenditure as part of an IP audit, helping you focus your budget on rights that continue to provide commercial value.

I changed Patent Prosecution in the Related Services section to Patent Protection because that gives us a verified live Panoramix page and is arguably a better internal link for this particular page. The Patent Protection page explicitly covers the whole lifecycle, including prosecution, renewal management, enforcement and licensing.
