About Joel David,
With over 8 years of experience in intellectual property, Joel specialises in patents within engineering, physics, computing, and emerging technologies. His expertise spans patent drafting, prosecution, landscaping, and IP strategy, particularly in the UK, US, and European jurisdictions. He has worked with a wide range of industries, including aerospace, telecommunications, AI, cryptography, autonomous vehicles, software, engineering, and medical technologies.
Joel is currently leading the patents team at Panoramix Limited. However, has previously managed part of the patent portfolio for a large multinational corporation’s vapour and liquid devices, ensuring strong IP protection across global markets. His experience also includes consultancy for start-ups, focusing on autonomous vehicle technology and AI, as well as providing expert patent advice for clients during his time in various law firms in the UK in the fields of telecoms, Extended Reality (XR), electronics, physics, finFET and vehicle emissions technologies – with a particular focus on standards-based patents and standards essential patents.
Given their rapid technological evolution and growing IP challenges, Joel is particularly keen to expand his expertise into Cybersecurity & Privacy Enhancing Technologies, Autonomous Vehicles & Smart Mobility, Green & Sustainable Technologies, and Quantum Computing & Cryptography.
Academically, he holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in physics from The University of Leeds, a Postgraduate Certificate in Intellectual Property from Bournemouth University, and is now also pursuing an LLM in Law from BPP University. Joel is also working towards EQE and UK PEB qualifications in addition to his Solicitor Qualification in England and Wales.
Joel hosts “The IP Survival Guide”, a new podcast for trainee patent attorneys, start-ups, and those new to IP. He also contributes to the CIPA Journal as an editor and provides pro bono IP workshops at Imperial College London. Beyond work, he is passionate about squash and amateur dramatics, which fuels his creativity and strategic thinking in patent law.
