About Joel
Joel David Briscoe is a Patent Consultant at Panoramix IP, with extensive experience in intellectual property strategy, patent drafting and prosecution, portfolio development and innovation management. With a background spanning law, physics and intellectual property, Joel combines technical understanding with commercial insight to help businesses identify, protect and maximise the value of their innovations.
Having previously worked internally as part of the core team at Panoramix IP, Joel now works with the firm as an independent Patent Consultant, providing flexible, senior-level patent and intellectual property expertise to our clients.
His experience covers the full patent lifecycle, from invention harvesting and initial patent strategy through to drafting, prosecution, opposition strategy and international portfolio management. Joel has worked extensively with the UKIPO, EPO and USPTO, helping clients secure and manage patent protection across multiple jurisdictions.
Experience
Joel has extensive experience working directly with inventors, R&D teams and in-house legal teams to identify potentially patentable innovations and develop commercially focused strategies for protecting them.
His work includes invention harvesting, patent drafting and patent prosecution, IP audits, trade secret management, opposition strategy and the development and management of international patent portfolios. He also has significant experience in patent search and analysis, including freedom-to-operate (FTO) analysis, prior art searching and patent landscaping to support product development, investment and other business-critical decisions.
During his previous time within Panoramix IP, Joel played an important role in developing the firm’s patent offering, strengthening client relationships and expanding its capabilities across both contentious and non-contentious intellectual property matters. His familiarity with Panoramix IP, its clients and its approach means he continues to work closely with the wider team in his role as Patent Consultant.
Joel also supports businesses with broader intellectual property and innovation strategy, including IP audits, trade secret management, invention harvesting and ideation sessions, and the development of practical IP policies and processes.
Clients and sectors
Joel works with businesses ranging from start-ups and university spin-outs to scale-ups and multinational R&D teams, helping them align their intellectual property strategy with their wider technical and commercial objectives.
His technical experience spans software and computer-implemented inventions, artificial intelligence and machine learning, electronics and embedded systems, engineering and physical sciences, telecommunications and networking, medical devices and health technology, battery and energy technologies, and aerosol-delivery and vapour technologies.
Within these areas, Joel has worked with innovations including algorithms, SaaS platforms, generative AI and machine learning systems, sensors and IoT devices, mechanical and materials engineering, wireless communications, diagnostic and wearable technologies, battery management systems, energy storage technologies and electronic vapour and aerosol provision systems.
Joel takes a commercially minded and technically informed approach to intellectual property, helping clients understand not only what can be protected, but how patents and other IP rights can support innovation, manage commercial risk and create long-term value for the business.
